Six young artists from Hamburg and Kassel opened a studio in Ruse from the 4th to the 12th of April as part of the German weeks in Bulgaria. With their innovative works of art they presented the new tendencies of the German cultural scene. Among these were works in print design, photography, and object installations. The port on the Danube became a place of exchange of creative ideas.

The ArtPort had its center in Canetti House. The artists not only showed us some of their already finished works from Germany, but they also created new pieces of art in their studio and during the workshops. The former trade house of the Canettis offered the young artists its creative space, in which they could work and meet the local public. From the 6th of April everyone in Ruse had the opportunity to observe the process of creation in action. On the 10th of April was the opening of the exhibition under the title “Road Charge”.

Opening on April 10 at 7.00 PM in Canetti House

“Road Charge” (MAUT) unites the concepts of the six young artists, as mobility, culture and consumption between the East and the West was the source of inspiration for their works in the port city of Ruse.

Mitko Mitkov
, born in Ruse, works as a photographer. His personal point of view on Bulgaria and on his second homeland Germany find expression in this form of art.

Stefan Fuchs and Marius Schwarz, both from Hamburg, students of Prof. Ingo Offermanns, they work together as print designers under the name SCHWARZFUCHS. In Ruse they not only showed us some of their selected works but also built an open bar as an installation in order to accelerate the exchange of ideas between the people.

Philip Pichler
also studies in HfbK in Hamburg in the class of Prof. Andreas Slominski. He provoked the audience with his open installation – a mystical exchange office.

Caspar Saenger
, a Hamburger student in the class of Prof. Matt Mullican, in his photo and objects installation he deals with the symbols of real and ostensible heritage in Eastern Europe.

Daniel Stubenvoll’s work is an impressive insight in the public space in town. A similar project in an urban context is already on display in Germany and was integrated in the exhibition. Daniel Stubenvoll studies in the Academy of Fine Arts in Kassel in the class of Prof. Bernhard Prinz and Prof. Bjørn Melhus.

This project of the International Elias Canetti Society was realized in cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg and the City Gallery of Ruse as part of the German weeks in Bulgaria with the financial support of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Sofia and the Robert Bosh Stiftung. We would like to thank also the Ruse State Opera and Ruse Theater for the organizational support.
