When do I love to eat culture? What is culture? Do I care about culture? Such a series of questions greeted all people entering Canetti House in answer to the invitation to experience the installation Apathy of Perceptions of the talented photographer and artist from Ruse – Yavor Sedyankov. On the entrance of the ‘black box’ of Bulgarian culture (the author had enclosed a space inside Canetti House forming a cube of black cloth with just a narrow slit for participants to enter through) we were met by a dim cacophony of voices and buzzing computer screens with archaic-looking chairs in front of them, as well as by an armchair facing a mirror – a silent invitation for a schizophrenic dialogue with ourselves about what is happening to our culture. The screens were simultaneously streaming the uncensored and unedited stories of people in Ruse, who were giving their own interpretations on the subject while in the role of documentary directors and operators – endless monologues and dialogues on culture, art, relationships… We would like to express our gratitude to Yavor for reminding us, through indulging us in an orgy of perceptions, that the egocentric culture, spewing from everywhere its own monologism and self-centeredness, does nothing but leave in our mouths and later in our stomachs the burning and acerb taste of gastric juices. Facades of pretensions, facades of authoritative views, facades of visions, concepts, projects, strategies, words, words, words without meaning, without heart, spoken in front of the mirror of our own drenched in sweat and topped with ketchup confidence. We have forgotten that culture is foremost concern about the others, dedication to the others, self-sacrifice for the others, so that they can be at the centre, so that you can share with them the meal you have prepared for them with love, and not forcing them in your own fears, passions and illusions…
