Creating a new knowledge-based ecological and civic culture through education – this was the main aim of the new project of the International Elias Canetti Society: “Man, Technology, Environment. Through education for sustainable ecological development in Ruse and the region”. The two-year-project was dedicated to the ecological changes and their consequences for people and environment, which might be very serious for societies undergoing economical and social transition, such as the Bulgarian one. These processes are accompanied by the need for big financial, political, technological and human resources as well as the need for information, knowledge and acquisition of new skills.

The project also addressed those people, who tend to remain out of the sphere of action of NGOs – socially disadvantaged children and youths, Roma people and the elderly. Apart from education provided by four Ecological units, “The Green Door” Touring Exhibition was displayed, a National Eco-forum and a Festival took place.

Partner of the IECS from the German side were: The Haus am Maiberg, The Academy for Civic and Social Education, Heppenheim and from the Bulgarian side – Club of the Friends of Nature Park “Rusenski Lom”. The activities were realized with the financial support of DBU – The German Federal Environmental Foundation and The Solidarity Action of The German Catholics Renovabis. The project was realized with the support of Ruse Municipality, Nature Park “Rusenski Lom” and Regional Library “Ljuben Karavelov”. Duration of the project: 2 years.
