Native Realm
Czesław Miłosz
‘In a sense, I consider myself a typical Eastern European. Surely it is true that their differentia specifica (distinctive feature) can be reduced to a lack of form – both external and internal. Their advantages – thirsty mind, passion in disputes, sense of irony, freshness of feelings, spatial or geographical imagination – all result of one principal flaw: they always remained in their youth, led by the sudden influx or outflow internal chaos. But form is to be obtained in stable societies. I’m a clear example of how many efforts are required to learn contrasting traditions, norms and too rich experiences and bring them into some order.’ Czesław Miłosz

Lazarus
Gabor Schein
How many things the son has to say to his dead father and how many things he wants to hear from him. All missed opportunities, everything left unsaid. And it is speech that maintains family relationships. In his book, which has already been translated in German and English, Gabor Schein has a miracle occur by resurrecting the father and conducting a conversation with him that would never have been possible during his lifetime. In his life he was missing the language; in death it is the only thing that can resurrect what never was. There is a story to tell and questions to answer so that his story could find its place in the much bigger context of family and national history. In a labyrinth of places and moments the main character Peter is looking for his own story, manages to resurrect his past and find his identity. The novel presents understanding and overcoming the past as the only possible way to survival and poses the questions about retouching and reproducing the past.

Under Snow
Antje Ravic Strubel
Thirteen points of view on the situation “under the snow”, thirteen post-communist situations and attempts at “outwitting” and survival, flight and escapism arranged by Antje Ravic Strubel in an alphabetical order, which nevertheless manage to get out of the established order and make it clear that there is something wrong with order itself. The crisis of a love couple, Eva and Vera, is seen through the prism of this panopticum of worldviews and points of view. With the help of extremely accurate psychological portraits the author thematizes differences in sexual aspect, in the worldviews of former East Germans and West Germans, in generations. And each story has its own style, language and narrative technique. Though the author has set their arrangement in advance, the reader is tempted to read them randomly.

Seraching for M
Doron Rabinovici
Two protagonists are obsessed with an unusual passion for transformations, with identification with the perpetrator and the criminal. One transformation is in the perpetrator of the crime in order to reveal him, to cause the necessary catharsis, to provoke his conscience. The other transformation is again in the perpetrator – in order to apprehend him and respectively destroy him. These two phenomena become systems for two societies and policies, become the willingness of society to manipulate and exploit the individual in the name of policy. Could someone give up their own identity to redeem the guilt of an entire society … or humanity? Will this be a second Christ or the “ragged Jew” from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale in which “the victim, the ragged by the thorns Jew is forced by fear to admit nonexistent guilt”? Why do societies need saints to redeem them? With his novel Doron Rabinovici makes us reflect upon these issues.

The Sweetness of Life
Paulus Hochgatterer
In a small idyllic town, so to say – between the years – between Christmas and New Year, something terrible happens: in a very cruel way an eighty-six-year old man is killed. Someone has crushed his head and the only witness of the crime is his seven-year old granddaughter who becomes dumb. Meanwhile strange things begin to happen in town… Behind criminal action once again arises the question of society and fear, in how many and in what realities do we live? With this thriller the Austrian writer and psychiatrist Paulus Hochgatterer won the literary award of the European Union in 2009.
