Baba Tonka High School, Ivan Vasov Street 18, Ruse

Baba Tonka High School and the International Elias Canetti Society would like to invite you to the presentation of the urban art project “Reclaim the Subway” on Friday, May 15 2013. The project aimed to revitalize in a creative way the closed subway next to Baba Tonka High School. Together with the German artist Markus Butkereit, a group of students between 11 and 18 years old have been working for more than one week on the site, cleaning it up, creating the artistic concept and finally realizing it.

Markus Butkereit (1976, Berlin)

Butkereit’s work is rooted in the graffiti writing that sprung up in Berlin during the 1990s and strongly influenced his artistic development. The exploration of the urban environment is of central importance to Butkereit. In different ways he develops works in public space which try to catch the attention of the spectator and to break the monotony of the streets and the routine of city life. He has been involved in numerous art projects and his works have been presented internationally in public spaces as well as in galleries, museums and festivals.

The project “Reclaim the Subway” took place in the frame of the 7th Skateboarding Festival “Collision Course” in Ruse and was financially supported by Goethe Institut Sofia and the Robert Bosch Fondation.
