First joint event of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Elias Canetti FoundationAlthough it was not Good Friday, the first joint event of the Elias Canetti Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Bulgaria brought together an audience of different generations. Ruse is the city of firsts and one of them is the first Nobel Prize winner born in Bulgaria. The literary legacy left by Elias Canetti is still little known to the general public and returning to it always says something new. Focusing on the concept of РОДИНА (MOTHERLAND), his best researcher in this country, prof. Penka Angelova, the President of the Elias Canetti Institute, justifies why he is a “European citizen par excellence”. “Indeed, his life takes place in many countries that he loves as his homeland, because that is where he was born and where part of his essence was created. In this way, he changes the topos of “homeland”, becoming “One returning to many countries”, for whom “education is homeland”.The audience walked in Elias Canetti’s footsteps in Ruse with the historian Veselina Antonova and the cultural manager Viktor Kirilov. The presentation, richly illustrated, describes the fullest possible picture, gathered in only 12 minutes, of the city and of the Canetti and Arditti families at the beginning of the 20th century. He gave his point of view on Bulgarian-German relations and cultural cooperation today and as a person who has spent many years in our country, he is always ready to tip the scales towards the positive side of our life. Which cannot be said about the German media. But generally speaking, for the media, good news is not news. The tired beauty and unique architecture of Ruse continue to fascinate visitors to the city. It is also the most appropriate backdrop for discussion when it comes to architectural heritage. The young architect Ekaterina Tsolova presented her research about this heritage in some Danube cities. Renowned Ruse architect Ventsislav Iliev congratulated his colleague for her commitment to the topic and pointed out that in this heritage we should not forget iconic buildings from the 1960s-70s. His pain is especially the building of the airport in Stryklevo, which is the object of commercial interests and intentions to turn it into something else. The Director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Bulgaria Norbert Beckmann-Dierkes is convinced that meetings like this should become traditional and at least once a year. He presented the tasks of the Foundation in Bulgaria and promised that at the next meeting we will feel his progress in the study of the Bulgarian language.
