Vacancy: Traineeship in Cultural Management

The International Elias Canetti Society was founded in 1992 in Ruse/Bulgaria, the birthplace of Elias Canetti. The central goals of the Society include a dedication to researching Canetti’s work, promoting the European integration process and participating in rebuilding civil societal structures in post-communist Bulgaria. The Society’s work encompasses essentially four fields: Cultural mediation, cultural dialogue, civic education and academics. Particular emphasis is placed on cooperation between the countries of the Danube cultural region. The cultural events we organize range from the annual Literature Festival Ruse, through youth events and exhibitions to international conferences.

We have two event locations: the Elias Canetti Centre houses the Austrian Library “Elias Canetti”, seminar rooms, as well as the International Elias Canetti Society’s office rooms. The Canetti House is used in its unrestored state as an alternative venue for concerts, performances or visual arts events. The International Elias Canetti Society succeeded in establishing it as a popular forum for contemporary art and culture in Ruse and Bulgaria. The premises are increasingly used by local initiatives, youth groups, and students for their events and for international gatherings.

To support our team we are looking for a trainee from September 15th, 2023 or the next possible date for a period of six months with the possibility of an extension of six more months. The person will be responsible for the planning and implementation of the projects and activities at the department of “Arts and Culture” – research, correspondence and accounting, communication with artists and partners and support on location, as well as assist us with the maintenance of the homepage and in the sphere of public relations (writing of PR-texts and articles for the homepage, translation, preparation of documentation and other administrative tasks).

For a traineeship at the International Elias Canetti Society – Ruse we have the following requirements:
– Excellent knowledge of German (native speaker language competence) and a good command of English or vice versa
– Knowledge of Bulgarian or another Slavic language is an advantage
– Good computer skills (MS-Office and Internet obligatory, WordPress – desired)
– Familiarity with the German and international cultural scene
– Experience in event and project management (advantageous)
– Flexibility, friendliness, commitment and responsibility as well as ability to work independently
– Started or completed university studies in humanities, cultural studies or social sciences and/or in the sphere of (cultural, media or event) management.

Important: The traineeship is not remunerated and is therefore aimed especially at students who can apply for Erasmus+ or kulturweit grant to help cover subsistence and travel costs incurred in connection with the traineeship. According to the new rules scholarship can be received during or one year after the completion of the studies as long as one applies for while still a student. For more information please turn to the International Office or Career Center at your university.

We would gladly offer advice and support to all internship applicants. We will also help with the search of accommodation on site. The living expenses in Bulgaria are relatively low in comparison to other European countries, whereby Ruse is considered to be a relatively cheap Bulgarian city.

We can testify that for many graduates the traineeship with the Canetti Society represents an important first step in the professional life. After their time in Ruse our trainees find jobs for example as Robert Bosch or DAAD lecturers in Eastern Europe or as project responsible in Germany.

The application (in English) should include a letter of motivation, CV and selected job references and has to be sent no later than June 30th, 2023 as one PDF file per e-mail to the Cultural Manager Mr. Viktor Kirilov: viktor.kirilov@eliascanetti.org

The selection of candidates will take place immediately after the closing date. If you have any questions in advance you may contact us per e-mail. We’re looking forward to receive your application!
